EPRIs DC microgrid project, now in design, calls for decentralized generation facilities distributing DC current to smaller neighborhood networks. All renewable energy sources -- wind, solar, fuel cells, etc. -- generate direct current. Distributed power sources in the future will all utilize one or more of these methods. It only makes sense to provide appliances that will efficiently operate on DC without the necessity of inverting to AC, eliminating this costly, inefficient, and unnecessary step. |
